American Catholics have swung dramatically against President Biden in recent years, and now boast a wide statistical lead over his Republican challenger.
On April 30, Pew Research released a report examining support for presidential candidates broken down by religion.
The poll found that 55% of Catholics support or are leaning toward supporting former President Donald Trump in a head-to-head matchup with Biden.

Conversely, only 45% of Catholics support Biden in the same one-to-one split.
Trump’s 12% approval rating marks a significant change from 2020, when he held a razor-thin lead of 50% to 49%.
Biden currently holds a slim lead among Hispanic Catholics, 49% to 47%, but the close race signals a significant demographic shift to the right. A similar poll conducted by Pew Research in 2020 found that Hispanic Catholics supported Mr. Biden over Mr. Trump, by a staggering 67% to 26%.

According to an April poll, about 60% of Protestants expressed support for Trump. Conversely, about 38% said they were leaning toward Biden.
Atheists, agnostics, and people with no religious affiliation supported Biden by wide margins. About 69% said they supported the Democratic incumbent, while only 28% said they supported Trump.

But Catholic leaders rejected this self-portrait, pointing out that he supports policies that are completely contrary to their faith, including deregulation of pro-choice policies and affirmation of gender ideology.
Cardinal Wilton Gregory of Washington, D.C., previously called Biden a “cafeteria Catholic” who “picks and chooses aspects of his faith to emphasize while ignoring or contradicting others.”
