According to none other than Bucs general manager Jason Richt himself, the Bucs are re-signing third-string quarterback John Wolford. Licht took X with him and announced the move.

Wolford signed with the Bucs last season and appeared to be enjoying his first year in Tampa. He was initially on the practice squad, but the Rams expressed interest in him in late October, and the Bucks decided to add him to the 53-man roster.

The former Wake Forest quarterback was with the Rams from 2020-2022 and was an ideal number for the Bucs with a new offensive coordinator at the time when Dave Canales introduced an offense with a similar rooted scheme to the Rams. 3 had proven to be a quarterback. Head coach Sean McVay said:

Wolford has been a good presence in Tampa Bay’s quarterback room throughout training camp, with Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask competing for the starting spot. At times during camp, Wolford looked like the best quarterback on the field among the group.

Wolford saw limited playing time in the preseason with the Bucks, completing 10 of 17 for 111 yards and a touchdown against the Steelers. He left the second exhibition game against the Jets with a neck injury. Before the injury, he was 4-of-4 for 57 yards. He did not play in the final preseason game against the Ravens as that responsibility was given to Mayfield and Trask.

Re-signing Wolford makes even more sense because he has experience working with the Bucs’ new offensive coordinator, Liam Cohen. Wolford played for him in 2019, 2020 and 2022. The offense under Coach Cohen is similar to what Tampa Bay already ran, but there are definitely some different adjustments and different terminology.walford helps to promote And understand it with another system.

Cohen has had a number of positive things to say about Wolford recently. They will meet again.

“He’s very sharp. It’s not just football,” Cohen said of Wolford. “He’s a very intelligent guy. Just being in the room and having a situational football conversation going on. What if this happens? What if that happens? What do you do if you give me this? ? John helped bring it to the table and it would be great if we could get him back.?

“He’s another voice that can teach them the system because he’s spent a tremendous amount of time working on it. Just the benefit of having those two in the room makes the whole thing work.”
