The Red Sox have agreed to a six-year contract extension with emerging ace Brayan Bello, sources told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The deal, first reported by ESPN’s Kylie McDaniel, is expected to be worth a total of $55 million and includes a $21 million seventh-year club option. The club has not confirmed the news.

The 24-year-old right-hander is in his third season with the Red Sox and has shown glimpses of the ace the Sox hope to be after the 2023 season. He started 10 games in May and June, and Bello posted a 2.37 ERA, striking out 53 batters in 60 2/3 innings. During that time he pitched four seven-inning innings.

Bello finished the season with a 4.24 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 28 starts. The Red Sox signed him as a free agent from the Dominican Republic in 2017 and he made his major league debut in 2022.

“He basically said, ‘Don’t be scared out there,'” Bello said. “‘Just throw what you can throw with faith.'”
