kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) is optimistic that more market-ready products will emerge this year with the launch of the Supercharger Series 2024, which aims to boost Malaysia’s innovation ecosystem.

Minister Chan Lee Kang said with the launch of this series, Mosti hopes to have an increasing number of high-quality products ready for commercialisation this year.

“This initiative is part of the ministry’s efforts to support innovators and start-ups to bring their products to market,” he told reporters after launching the Supercharger Series 2024 themed ‘Vision for Ventures: Pre-Commercialisation Initiatives’ today.

The series is a strategic initiative designed to foster collaboration, engagement and knowledge sharing within Malaysia’s research, development, commercialisation and innovation ecosystem.

With a focus on accelerating the commercialization journey from ideation to market entry, the series aims to revolutionize the pre-commercialization stage of innovation in Malaysia and by 2024, it aims to create significant and far-reaching impact through nurturing local technopreneurs, increasing Malaysia’s commercialization rate, improving economic growth through R&D commercialization, and creating high-skilled jobs.

This initiative provides a valuable opportunity for university spin-off companies, researchers, private organizations and government agencies to gain critical knowledge as well as identify and address various challenges, thereby stimulating economic growth, strengthening the innovation ecosystem and ensuring that emerging technologies and research breakthroughs reach the market effectively, benefiting society at large.

Chan said Malaysia ranks 36th out of 132 countries in the Global Innovation Index 2023, highlighting the country’s continued progress and efforts to foster innovation across sectors.

“This achievement is noteworthy and there is ample room for further progress. A whole-of-government approach is therefore crucial in the field of science, technology and innovation (STI) to foster collaboration across multiple ministries and agencies and address pressing societal issues through STI development,” he stressed.

Malaysian Innovation Research Accelerator CEO Datuk Rais Husin Mohamed Ariff said the Supercharger series showcases the organisation’s commitment to providing the tools, knowledge and networks to translate innovative ideas into impactful products and services.

“The growth of the Supercharger Series has been truly impressive, with participation tripling from 500 participants in 2022 to more than 1,500 participants in 2023 across Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Pahang and Johor,” he added.

Separately, the Malaysia Commercialisation Year Summit 2024, scheduled to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on August 12, aims to promote commercialisation success stories from Malaysian universities, research institutes and research organisations. The summit will focus on key areas such as biotechnology, hydrogen economy and space technology.
