Deadline reports that director Hong Won-ki has been tapped to direct “Unnie,” a K-pop thriller inspired by BLACKPINK’s documentary. Set against the backdrop of the competitive world of K-pop, the film is currently in development and is set to begin shooting in Los Angeles and Seoul soon. Cast details for the thriller have yet to be revealed.

Director Hong Won-ki is known for directing Urban Myths, Connecting, and Netflix’s horror anthology “Goedam,” based on Korean legends. The film is based on a script by Lin Q. Yu and features a quartet of K-pop idols as the central characters of the story. The screenwriter admitted that the idea for Unni came to him after watching a documentary about BLACKPINK, which consists of Lisa, Jennie, Jisoo, and Rosé.

“I’m super excited that my K-pop thriller screenplay ‘UNNIE’ hits town this week. It’s been 18 months since I first watched the BLACKPINK documentary and came up with the initial idea for this script. Rather than falling down the K-pop rabbit hole, I actively jumped into the abyss,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Badlands’ producer Scott Strauss on Unnie told Deadline, “After meeting with Zaniblos (the video production company founded by Hong Won-ki) in Korea, we knew they had a unique sensibility in the K-pop world and could deliver the authenticity that fans were looking for. Director Hong’s spectacular videos and passion for the genre made him the only choice for our film.”

K-pop artists such as Sunshine and Moonshine have been tapped to produce the film’s original soundtrack.
