The same people who talk about the importance of making choices to fulfill your purpose don’t seem to care about choices when it comes to your job. You have value to offer in the form of your labor and all that comes with it: skills, experience, and insight. If a company wants to work with you and you agree to the terms, everyone wins.

Surely the government doesn’t want to interfere with that, right? Providing your labor to willing buyers of that labor creates more economic output, which in turn generates more income and taxable wages.

But under Biden, the government, driven by trade union and “labor activist” interests, is doing just the opposite. They are trying to kill an estimated 64 million workers and businesses (including small businesses). ) depends on the effort.

“Merit-based employment” may be “unfair”: American Psychological Association

That may seem insane, and you’re right. And being able to provide the workforce and work flexibility we want is diabolical and a complete violation of our individual rights.

So-called gig work and freelancing are under attack from the Biden administration’s Department of Labor. (St. Petersburg)

The Biden administration went around Congress and tapped the Department of Labor (DOL) to finalize anti-gig and independent labor rules in early January. The new rules, based on a disastrous “model” policy developed in California called “AB5,” will be devastating for tens of millions of workers who want to work flexibly and independently rather than become employees. will produce results.

Unions and activists say it’s “unfair” to work independently, but what’s really unfair is when a third party interferes in your work, or when you sign a contract that doesn’t involve a third party. Research and polls continually show that independent workers themselves want and prefer this way of working. The reasons range from preferences regarding flexibility to whether you can earn more money as a contractor or gig worker.

But the reason doesn’t matter. People should be able to work the way they want. There is no justification required. Your job should be yours to choose, not the unions, politicians, or fraudsters.

This DOL rule would override independent labor protections and clarifications introduced under the Trump administration, forcing employment status on many (if not most) independent workers and effectively trying to eliminate jobs.

The law is scheduled to go into effect on March 11, but has already faced backlash, including a lawsuit filed by the founders of Fight for Freelancers USA, a bipartisan coalition of freelancers represented by the Pacific Law Foundation. (Warren v. Department of the United States). labor) etc.

This could disrupt the entire economy. Upwork’s research institute estimates that by 2023, nearly 40% of the U.S. workforce will be doing some type of freelance work. This puts the livelihoods of approximately 64 million Americans at risk.

Not only will this shift result in job losses and small businesses struggling to survive, but companies will also end up outsourcing more contractor work to foreign workers who are not subject to the same rules and restrictions. I’m going to do it.

Americans will have fewer jobs. Decline in economic output and growth. Tax revenue decreases. Freedom is reduced. The only people who don’t think this is a completely stupid idea are those who believe in Bidennomics.

And this is a despicable abuse of power and a violation of individual rights.

So what can you do? As we’ve seen with some recent grassroots victories, using your voice is important, and in some areas so is shame (although some politicians have no shame at all) (I know).

This ruling affects nearly everyone, so use your voice to write to your state legislators as well as state advocates (governor, treasurer, etc.) who may be able to provide assistance. Please write. Even better, organize a writing campaign. The more noise you can make, the better. Consider supporting lawsuits like those mentioned above and the nonprofit organizations that support them, or consider filing your own lawsuit.

Removing barriers to earning a living should benefit everyone. But as always, when it comes to your rights, it’s the government that adds barriers and the ones you need to be protected from. We must stand up and not allow the government to dictate to us how to be productive and earn a living.
