A big loss, but premium and international resilience
The imminent opening of America’s new premium-centric lounges, as a carrier like top competitors Delta Line and United Airlines, reports the continued strength of its international portfolio and premium seats despite a general slowdown in travel demand amid economic uncertainty.
Recent sales decline
The Americans lost $473 million in the first three months of 2025, the company revealed Thursday.
Like its competitors, the Americans reported significant drop-offs in coach sales on domestic routes.
“The main domestic cabins are weak. I think that’s the driving of the overall demand you’re looking at,” Steve Johnson, vice-chairman and chief strategy officer of American Airlines, told analysts Thursday.
If the slowdown continues, carriers can cut routes, retire aircraft early, and push back delivery of new planes, ISOM said.
Silver lining: Frequent flyer
Still, the most loyal American customers continue to book luxury seats and international flights. They haven’t really recouped their overall spending, the airline reported.
Some of the premium cabin seats booked by paying customers remain “historically high,” Isom said.
Last year I wrote about the phenomenon throughout this industry. This is good news for airline revenue, but it’s a trend that’s not welcome for frequent flyers. I hope their free upgrades will be clear.
Specifically, American travelers with AADVantage Loyalty accounts make up more than three-quarters of the revenues the airline earned in premium cabin seats in the first quarter of this year.
Meanwhile, AADVantage members who spent 8% more than last year between January and March spent 8% more between January and March than last year.
America’s revenues are a reminder of why Americans (like their competitors) have soon signed up to the only requirement for accessing free Wi-Fi through its card program and through Aadvantage members when they’re flying. It will start in 2026.
Do you want to wait a long time for XLR?
Additional nuggets coming out of Thursday’s revenue call: Travelers may have to wait several more months to see America’s new, long-range capable aircraft sporting the lie flat suite.
In answering questions about Americans’ attitudes about paying tariffs on new planes, ISOM appears to suggest that carriers could be in the second half of 2025 before receiving their first Airbus A321XLR. This is a long distance narrow body jet for sports Privacy Door Sliding Flagship Suite And a genuine premium economy cabin.
“At the end of the year there will be delivery that may be subject to customs duties. [A]321xlr was built in Europe,” he said.
The airline previously said it would get a jet at some point in 2025, but in itself was slower than that. Initial projection When the carrier orders 50 XLR plains.
“We can’t get it right away,” says Brians Not Chins, the top American network planner. I told me last October.
The Americans are planning to deploy the XLR on the Premium Transcontinental route, replacing the current “A321T” jet with Business, Premium Economy and Economy first.
But ultimately, the airline says aircraft can be used deep into South America on a transatlantic route.
About customs duties…
The issue of tariffs is a key source of economic uncertainty that loomed over Americans’ forecasts in 2025 amid President Donald Trump’s world trade war.
“It certainly isn’t something we don’t intend to absorb, and we don’t expect our customers to be welcomed.
“So we have something to do about this,” he added.
