By most accounts, I’m a decent guy. I mostly put on music recitals for my kids (recorders don’t count), took out the trash when I wasn’t asked, and never intentionally recorded a wedding video. First-time father Scotty Scheffler has one request for myself and other imperfect men like me: It’s about rotating slowly.

I’m not talking about your putting stroke as smooth as Sinatra’s voice after the second Rusty Nail, but in general, as a professional, as a husband, as a man of faith, and I’m talking about your performance as a new father (which I’m sure you will). You’re making the rest of us look bad. Very bad.

Being a lawyer is a tough job, but nothing beats yours. On the highly competitive PGA Tour, you’re the Ricky Bobby of the pros. “If it’s not first, it’s last.” With the world’s No. 1 ranking and two coveted Masters trophies on your mantel, you’re the perfect winning machine.

Earlier this year, you won four of five consecutive tournaments, a feat last achieved by Tiger Woods in 2007-2008. I mean, I’d like to think that if the golf shoes had been reversed, I would have communicated that sublime sentiment to my wife before our firstborn was born, rather than suggesting, say, that we name our daughter Augusta or our son Augustine. Memories of victory. The fact that I have an alternative in mind suggests otherwise.

Your marital scorecard is bogey-free, but your eternal priorities are even more admirable. After winning the Masters for the second time, you said you play golf to praise God and all that He has done in your life. Such a press conference may be even more beautiful than your match. After all, on golf’s grandest stage, and for a brief moment of victory at Augusta, your thoughts turned not to your own rich gifts, but to the infinitely richer giver. That’s the humility I strive for, but I doubt my highest score on life’s most difficult course is even close to your lowest. I’ll share my caddy here. Why not listen to what he has to say more?

The more I think about it, Mr. Scheffler, no matter what else you do in this life, please do not Slow down your roll.
