Adam Pearson of ‘A Different Man’ talks about acting with disabilities

another man‘s Adam Pearson is speaking out about the harmful tropes that continue to plague disabled actors in Hollywood.

In a recent sit-down interview, variety, Adam sat down with co-stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve to discuss the world premiere of his new A24 film at Sundance. At the time, Adam shared his frustrations with how actors with disabilities are incorporated into storylines.

another man is a psychological thriller that tells the story of Edward, a man who undergoes facial reconstruction surgery and later becomes obsessed with actors in stage productions depicting Edward’s life.

For those who don’t know, Adam has neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). This is a rare genetic disease in which tumors (usually non-cancerous) grow along nerve tissue.

The British actor and presenter spoke about his experiences with the stereotypes that disabled actors are often subjected to, and the patterns he hopes Hollywood will rid itself of when it comes to representation.

“Usually, there are three types of roles, metaphors, and stereotypes, whatever term you want to use,” Adam said. variety. “There’s either the villain, who wants to kill Batman or James Bond because I’m flawed in appearance. And there’s the victim — the little violin that says, ‘Woe to me!'”

“And then there’s the hero. Even though I look ugly, I’m doing an average guy’s job, so I’m somehow braver than the average guy, no matter what the average guy’s job is.”

He went on to talk about how harmful it is for actors with disabilities to be included in these types of storylines.

“I think that’s lazy writing,” Adam added. “Why do able-bodied people write about disabilities without being consulted? Because when it happens, they might finally be right for once.”

“But most of the time, it’s going to be really inauthentic and inaccurate, and it’s going to serve the disabled community as well as disabled movie lovers accordingly.”
