Only three NFL teams have more dead money in the 2023 salary cap than the Green Bay Packers. The Green Bay Packers are now paying the price for their recent hiatus and are feeling the pain of letting go of Aaron Rodgers’ historic deal this season.
All in all, the Packers are paying $57.1 million in dead money for the 2023 cap. With the base salary capped at $224.8 million this year, about 25 percent of the team’s cap resources will be spent on players not in Green Bay this season.
Things are tough for a franchise in transition after trading Rodgers out.
Here are the nine players who have charged the Packers with cap dead money in 2023:
Dead Money Cost: $40,313,570
The inevitable reality of Packers trading Rodgers, who signed a record-breaking deal last summer: Rodgers’ cap will be reached in 2023 for the PackersA team without him playing would be the biggest team in football. Rodgers’ dead-money cost to the Packers is higher than Patrick Mahomes’ cap count with the Chiefs in 2023.
Dead Money Cost: $7,950,000
Amos’ contract with the Packers expired in February. There were rumors that Amos could return to Green Bay, but the Packers signed free agents Tarvarius Moore and Jonathan Owens and drafted Anthony Johnson Jr., making Amos a potential return to Green Bay in 2023. Likely to play in place.
Dead Money Cost: $3,007,895
Lowry’s contract expired in February. He signed a new deal with the Minnesota Vikings, so the Packers will count him on their caps and face him twice in 2023.
Dead Money Cost: $1,492,000
Reid’s one-year deal expired in February. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks as a free agent.
Dead Money Cost: $1,391,668
Cobb’s contract expired in February. He rejoined Aaron Rodgers with the Jets in New York.
Dead Money Cost: $1,050,000
Lewis’ contract expired in February. He remains unsigned but has no plans to return to the Packers, who picked Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft in the first two days of the 2023 draft.
Dead Money Cost: $1,005,000
Crosby’s contract expired in February. The Packers keep the door open to a return, but draft pick Anders Carlson is unlikely to return. Crosby recently sold his home in Green Bay.
Dead Money Cost: $500,000
Tonyang’s contract expired in February. He signed a new deal with the Chicago Bears, so like Dean Lowry, the Packers will count Tonyan on their caps and face him twice in 2023.
Dead Money Cost: $461,782
The Packers will have about $500,000 in this year’s cap after releasing Rodgers last November. He currently plays for the Houston Texans.
