The San Francisco 49ers lead the NFL with nine players named to the 2024 Pro Bowl roster, announced Wednesday. Quarterback Brock Purdy and cornerback Charvarius Ward are first-time Pro Bowlers, and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was named an alternate. Including Aiyuk, 12 alternates are from San Francisco.
The NFC Pro Bowl quarterback selection also includes Dallas Cowboys starter Dak Prescott and Los Angeles Rams veteran Matthew Stafford, while the AFC includes Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa and Baltimore Ravens quarterback QB Lamar Jackson of the Kansas City Chiefs and QB Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs are on the list. Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen, Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff and Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts were notable snubs at the Pro Bowl.
Rams star defensive tackle Aaron Donald made history with his selection, becoming the only defensive lineman since 1970 to make the Pro Bowl in each of his first 10 seasons. This is the second consecutive year the Ravens have had seven Pro Bowl players in Baltimore.
The selection of players was determined by a consensus vote of fans, players, and coaches. The 49ers also dominated in fan voting, with Purdy, the 49ers’ first Pro Bowl QB since Jeff Garcia in 2002, receiving 451,864 votes, followed by McCaffrey with 429,993 and George Kittle with 373,750. did. Tagovailoa received 414,502 fan votes, while Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce rounded out the top five with 327,263 votes.
The NFL has moved the Pro Bowl to a new format for the 2023 season, moving from tackle football games to skills competitions and other events, and ultimately a flag football game between the AFC and NFC. This format will continue for a second year in 2024, with the Pro Bowl game to be held on February 4th at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
The Manning brothers, Peyton and Eli, will return as coaches for the AFC and NFC teams in the 2024 tournament.

Was the QB ignored?
Purdy and Prescott make sense for the NFC. But Stafford over Goff? The Lions starter who was traded for Stafford two years ago has slightly better numbers and a better record this season. The AFC selections (Tagovailoa, Mahomes, Jackson) are a no-brainer. Would Josh Allen have been able to beat Mahomes if the Bills hadn’t struggled most of the year? Or… given the Chiefs’ struggles, C.J. Stroud could have defeated Mahomes if the rookie hadn’t been injured? Were they able to break through and participate? — Mike Jones, NFL Senior Writer
With so much WR talent, players are always left behind.
Wide receiver is a crowded part of the NFC. Lamb and Brown make sense as starters, and few would argue with including Evans and Nacua as reserves. But you can certainly make an argument that productive wideouts Amon-Ra St. Brown, DJ Moore, and Aiyuk deserve to be on the team. By the way, who would you trade with? Evans is the only player under 1,300 going into Week 18, but he also has the most touchdown catches of any of them (13). In the AFC, there may be some discussion of Courtland Sutton (10 touchdown catches) joining the team. But Hill, Chase, Allen, and Cooper are a tough quartet. — jones

At least there’s nothing here. All six players selected have surpassed 1,000 yards this season and are versatile enough to contribute in the passing game. — jones
In the AFC, the Jets’ Quincy Williams was supposed to play with 131 tackles, 15 for a loss, and one interception. However, his lack of success in New York likely cost him.
It’s interesting that the NFC opted out of Tampa Bay’s Antwon Winfield Jr. He certainly ran a more productive campaign in Arizona than Baker. — jones
From humble beginnings to the core of the 49ers
The 49ers have nine Pro Bowlers, the most in the league, and the most since 2013, when they lost to the Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game. This year’s roster includes two first-timers, Purdy and Ward, who stand out from their humble beginnings in the NFL.
Purdy, of course, was the final pick in 2022, leading all starting quarterbacks in passer rating in his second season and setting a 49ers franchise record on Sunday with 4,280 passing yards in a season.
Meanwhile, Ward went undrafted out of Middle Tennessee State in 2018. He was sensational in the second half of the 2023 season, shutting down Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf in Week 12 and returning an interception 66 yards for a touchdown against the Seahawks three weeks later. Cardinals. Perhaps most impressive is the fact that Ward has allowed just two touchdowns in 16 games. When targeting him, opposing quarterbacks have a passer rating of 56.8.
One player who was overlooked: Aiyuk has already set a career high with 1,317 receiving yards and leads the league with an average of 18.3 yards per catch. — Matt Burrows, 49ers beat writer
