Sam Worthington attended D23 this weekend, where it was announced that Avatar 3 will be titled Avatar: Fire and Ashes.
Extra’s Teri Seymour spoke with Sam and talked about what’s coming up in the film.
While Worthington said he couldn’t say “too much” because director James Cameron was with them, he did tease, “We’re just expanding the world and digging deeper into these characters.”
Sam has been involved with the series for 18 years. He said: “That’s a long time. You know, this is like a second family to me and now I bring my family onto the set, which is interesting. Being a part of something for the first time as an actor and being able to tell such a relatable story is one of those gifts that I never expected to have.”
Worthington says he never expected to star in what became the highest-grossing film of all time.
While remaining humble, Sam cited James Cameron to explain the key to the series’ success. He commented, “Jim always says you have to get the characters right. And when it’s about heart and what people will do for their families and the sacrifices they’ll make, you can just add all the extra frills on top and take it to the next level, but you’ve got to have a strong heart at the heart of it.”
Terry also spoke with Sam’s co-star Zoe Saldana, who also shared some tidbits of her own about Avatar: Fire and Ashes.
She said: “The next Avatar is called Fire and Ashes. The second one is called The Way of Water, which, as you know, takes you into the underwater life of Pandora and the people and communities that live around it. This time it definitely has to do with fire, and fire is one of the very strong elements. This journey will take us through the ups and downs of a new set of challenges that Sully and his family will be facing.”
Saldana said she was honored to be a part of the series, explaining, “I get to be a part of a story that has a powerful message that can reach so many people around the world and resonate with everyone, and it brings us all together in cinemas to watch something that we can all experience.”
