Kamryn Spina’s (@camrynspina) Viral TikTok is a warning to job seekers around the world. You cannot officially take up the position until HR says so.
She found this out the hard way after uprooting her life by moving from Florida to Virginia for a job she wasn’t actually hired for. She says it was clearly due to a series of missteps and a lack of important communication on the part of her hiring manager.
Spina tells her story in a nine-minute TikTok, explaining how she got into a situation that sounds like a comedy of mistakes. However, there’s no doubt that this whole ordeal wasn’t fun for her at the time.
@camrynspina #GRWM In the meantime, I will explain that I traveled 1,000 miles for a job that wasn’t mine!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a very long time for me #Relocate #work #trend #unemployed ♬ Original song – Honey
“I moved from Florida to Virginia for a job that I wasn’t actually hired for,” she says cheerfully into the lens. While preparing to apply cosmetics and applying makeup to her face, Spina suddenly applied for a job she found online and received a response from a representative at the company who would be her direct supervisor. is said to be the beginning of it all. She should be hired for this new position.
We then set up an interview on Microsoft Teams. “It was amazing,” Spina said. In the end, she said, she and her interviewer talked for an hour and a half, and when it was over, she verbally patted herself on the back for a job well done because everything went so smoothly. . The TikToker’s situational awareness was spot on. Her potential new boss follows up with her after her discussion and invites her to her workplace to check out their work with her follow-up interview, to which she also agrees. did.
Since she was coming from Florida, her arrival at the facility required some planning, so the company rented her a car and drove her to Virginia, which she did. “The interview lasted five hours on location, so just like the first interview, I couldn’t stay silent. I really enjoyed talking about the work. I was really excited. And the way this all started… In the in-person interview, he looked at me and left five hours after I was there. So I think there’s no question that I would really like to hire you for this role. ”
Spina took this as an offer, but asked the interviewer to give her some time to think about it because she needed to figure out the logistics of moving from Florida to Virginia. Her potential boss said that was perfectly fine, and once she returned to Florida and managed to get her ducks in order for her move, she said, Then she… She wrote back to the company and told them she would be attending the gig.
She began discussing her start date with her new boss, who asked her to obtain a company email address and also contact Human Resources to begin the onboarding process. While all of this is going on and Spina is communicating with recruiters on the company’s communications system, she is buying a moving truck and looking for an apartment in Virginia while starting a new job. I bought her a hotel room for the week. She gets the job and finds out that her start date is her August 1st and her first payday is her August 11th.
She even involved her boyfriend in the process. He drove her moving truck 13 hours to Virginia and she followed in her car. They placed all of her belongings in a storage unit in her new state, and the next day he turned her moving truck around to drive it back to its original location in Florida. It was a tough ordeal, but it was all worth it for Spina, as he was able to land a new position at a company he was excited to work for.
Spina started work on Aug. 1 and said she was “fully immersed” in the experience, taking on some of her supervisor’s responsibilities, shopping for the company and generally jumping headfirst into her new job. Told.
However, after a few days on the job, her boss asked if she could speak with the human resources department to make sure she fit in perfectly with the company. When she did so, Human Resources said they were still reviewing applications for the position, which she thought was ridiculous because Ms. Spina believed she had already been hired. .
But the next day, her boss took her into his office and said, “Hey, there’s something wrong with your background check.” Spina contradicted her boss’ claims, saying that was impossible because she had never been given a ‘detention’ or speeding ticket, let alone any criminal history that would show up on her background check. said it was “ridiculous.”
The next day, Spina was told by Human Resources that they were hiring additional applicants and would be notified if another position became available in the near future. The TikToker again tells them that they are all wrong and they assure her that she is not wrong.
After the phone call, she immediately calls her boss, who assures her that this is how they have onboarded many people in the past, and that she will not work until everything is clear in case there is a problem. She added that she shouldn’t go back to , as she is “in the field”.
The next day, while Spina was sitting in her hotel room waiting for news, she received another call from Human Resources. Hoping it’s all just a big misunderstanding. That wasn’t the case. Her company informed her that she would no longer work for the company. At that point Spina was sitting on the phone sobbing because she had just uprooted her life in order for her to have the opportunity to work for this company.
To make matters worse, Spina is ghosted by her boss. Still, she was determined that she wasn’t going to sit around and not receive some form of compensation for the money she spent moving all the way from Florida to Virginia. This includes moving trucks, storage units, gas, and other moving-related expenses. And not to mention that she spent about 7 days working at the company for the position she was told she had received.
In her letter to human resources, she added that she intended to take “legal action” against the company if she did not receive compensation, and said she had had multiple communications with her supervisor to support her claims. Stated.
“100% had an offer, were willing to work, were willing to hire,” she noted, adding that they could be in “problems” as long as the entire situation is addressed.
Ms. Spina said with a smile that the company agreed with her and “mailed her a check for a lot of money,” perhaps knowing that the company might take her case to court if she wanted to. You can get even more cash.
Although the ordeal sounded like a nightmare, Spina managed to keep her old job and now lives with her parents.
TikTokers who watched her video were shocked by the whole situation and blamed Spina’s boss’ incompetence during the entire process. “That’s really crazy! That guy honestly should be fired if he didn’t actually cross-reference with HR,” one user wrote.
“I work in human resources. This is totally insane,” wrote another, seemingly perplexed as to how this could have happened in the first place.
A commenter who said he works as a recruiter offered some simple advice for job seekers. “The person in charge of recruitment here has not given me a job offer or a job. I am so sorry that this happened!!”
