A New York-based barista went viral on TikTok after recording himself accidentally charging a customer $1,453 instead of $14.53 for a coffee order.
Barista Alexander Saint Von (@alexander_saintvon) recently photo slideshow On TikTok. One of the images showed a failed check. The other photo was of St. Von. As of Monday evening, her video had been viewed more than 33,700 times, with the vast majority of users balking at the mistake.
“I accidentally charged someone $1453.00 for coffee instead of $14.53 so I was hiding at work,” the barista wrote in a text overlay.
In fact, the receipt shows a subtotal of $10.50 and an additional tip of $1,439.47. In the comments, viewers wondered how the deal went through and how it seemingly went off without a hitch.
One person asked, “How did their card get through?” In response, another viewer explained that the customer likely had a “high limit credit card.”
And the customer in question was forgiving. “They weren’t too upset because there was an accident and the coach just called off the game,” St. Von wrote. The customer also got his money back.
But Mr. St. Von is not the first worker to make this mistake.
“We’ve done this before,” one worker said. “Thankfully, the person was nice about it, so my manager was able to override it.”
“My boss was charged $4,030 instead of $40.30 and didn’t notice for days,” another added.
Others, on the other hand, made fun of St. Von for his generous tip.
“That also seems intentional, because it [gratuity] It’s like I told myself that,” one viewer said.
