When it first became apparent that the Bucks would have a different offense this year, many wanted to know what this meant for starwide receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Both receivers thrived on the Bruce Aliens’ vertical base offense, earning 1,000-yard seasons and Pro Bowl appearances, establishing themselves as the two best in the game. So what will change for them when Dave Canales’ plans are put into action?
Canales brought in Seattle assistant receivers coach Brad Izik from the Seahawks as the Bucks’ wide receivers coach. That’s another change for Evans and Godwin. Canales and Izik were paired with a dynamic duo of Seattle wide receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Rocket, another 1,000-yard Pro Bowler.
Metcalfe had 4,218 receiving yards and 35 touchdowns in four years, while Rocket had an impressive career with 7,100 yards and 54 touchdowns in eight seasons. Each player has enjoyed success under the supervision of Izhik and Canales. Canales also coached wide receivers when not coaching Seattle quarterbacks.
Mike Evans and Chris Godwin have had two illustrious careers in their own right, and Evans continues to build. Hall of Fame resume. Will Evans and Godwin play a role similar to Metcalfe and Rocket’s when moving to a previously successful system? pewter report podcast So he answered the question, detailing Evans and Godwin’s coaching and the role they’ll play this season.

Is it really as simple as having Mike Evans play the role of DK Metcalfe in Dave Canales’ new offense? Bucks wide receiver coach Brad Izik addressed the topic. Pewter Report Podcast.
“If you look at what Mike does for us, he’s 6-4, 6-5 and obviously he can run and stretch the field,” Izik said. “If we say, ‘Hey, that’s all you’ve done, and I’m going to put that on DK exactly,’ that’s a good selling point for Mike. Yes, you have that role.” But there are some other things we can do with you.”
“The process of getting DK on as a rookie and getting him into the 2nd and 3rd years is something Mike has already done, but it would be helpful to have that already on tape. Really, you. pitched the offense to Mike and said, “Here’s the role we want you to play. Here’s where we invest the offseason to be ready and know what to expect next season.” I want it.”
And then there was Chris Godwin, who praised Izik for being the ultimate professional on the Pewter Report podcast. Godwin didn’t miss a single voluntary workout or practice during the offseason program. He’s been a fixture in the Blues Aliens’ offense in recent years, but Izik and Dave Canales believe Godwin can actually perform best on the perimeter.
“And when it comes to Chris, it’s funny how he did so well in this slot last year and he has such a big guy,” Izik said. “Part of it, I think, is because of the words, ‘Okay, he’s back from rehab.’ He’s still a strong guy and he’s going to catch everything and chase whatever he catches.” understands it very well. And now we want to transition him to do more external things like he used to. He can still do everything. ”

On closer inspection, Dave Canales’ new offense has a different wording and some differences in certain routes and concepts from what Tampa Bay and Seattle did last year. However, Izik loses neither receiver’s skill set nor anything. All he and Canales are doing is taking what Mike Evans and Chris Godwin have already done and adding a little more to their roles.
And that means they will move the target in 2023. Evans will continue to play in the X position as a split end, but will also be used in slots to create favorable matchups at times and will be moved in the same way as DK. Metcalf was used in Seattle. The same thing happens to Godwin, he sees the time in his slot and the Z Receiver (Flanker) also starts moving.
“We have two big pieces of the puzzle that can solve everything,” Izik said. “If you look at DK Metcalf and his growth in his first, second, third year and say, ‘Mike, you’ve already done all this,’ you can take on those roles. Now, where did the subtle changes come from? What you called things routing depth, footwork and what you’ve done so far and what we ask of you here.”
“These things get ingrained in you when you have a lot of experience. Na. It’s like, “Okay, I want another revolution.” So I’m going to destroy the muscle memory. We need to introduce some new tools. That’s the hardest part. ”
Mike Evans and Chris Godwin ready to make big play in scramble training
The best thing about having Mike Evans and Chris Godwin is that they are both humble, they are leaders and they put winning above stats and everything else. Bucks’ great tandem has no ego, but it’s hard to find in his NFL today. Evans and Godwin have been very receptive to new ideas coming from Dave Canales and Brad Izik, as well as various tweaks being made to the new Bucks offense.

“Chris, the rep we got this offseason was great. Mike, he picked us up as soon as he came. [to OTAs]”I thought, ‘Hey Mike, I know you’ve been doing this for a long time, but can I add two more steps to this route?’ is like, “Oh, I get it, I get it.” If you just tell them why, they will agree. That’s really great. It was great to see some guys at DK [Metcalf] and Tyler [Lockett] are doing. Tyler, broken play nuances and scramble drills too. It made it so much easier for us to coach our players – ‘just keep playing’.
Both Evans and Godwin were successful scramble drill receivers when Jameis Winston was at centre-back at the time. Winston’s mobility extended plays, and big break plays used to find Evans and Godwin on the field. The Rockets and Metcalf have done the same in Seattle, and the amount of new offensive rollouts, bootlegs and waggle will give them more opportunities to do so in Tampa Bay this year.
“Both Kyle [Trask] and baker [Mayfield], they’re athletic and they’re going to break pockets,” said Izik. “They’re going to extend the play, so we have to be ready for the second play. When we’re building the Scramble Reaction, Tyler – there’s no better player in the league. There really isn’t. Russell. “Whether it’s Wilson or Geno Smith, he’s done the same thing over and over. They say the ball gets energy when it’s off play. Tyler is always the first player to expend that energy, so that’s it.” I would like to incorporate into the players [in Tampa Bay] likewise. “
