JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The bragging rights were at stake among several community first responders who gathered to play Wiffle Ball in support of a local veterans’ organization Saturday morning. .
Honor Flight of the Appalachian Highlands occupied Johnson City’s TVA Credit Union Ballpark to host a fundraiser for the Wiffleball tournament.
Teams from Johnson City Police Department, Johnson City Fire Department, ETSU Public Safety, Bristol, Tennessee State Police and Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office participated in the game. This is his second year Honor Flight has hosted the event, and this time the weather was much better than last year’s snow.
Each team raised play money, all of which was donated to honor flights that take veterans to their respective war memorials in Washington, DC.
A Johnson City firefighter told News Channel 11 that the Johnson City firefighters are an important organization for the department because many of the local firefighters are also veterans.
“They are taking veterans who worked hard for their country to see the memorial in their later years,” said Joseph Canady of the City of Johnson Fire Department.
“They can see what their fellow soldiers would have fought for and they can actually work on it. We wouldn’t have had the chance to do that and we’re really happy to be here.”
