SZA, Kiki Palmer and Issa Rae perform their new buddy comedy ‘One of Them Days’.
‘Extra’s’ Melvin Robert sat down with the ladies to talk about the film, which Issa produced. In the film, SZA and Keke play best friends and roommates, and SZA’s character’s boyfriend runs out of rent and takes extreme steps to avoid eviction.
SZA is best known for her iconic musical hits, but she’s now branching out into acting.
SZA said she was excited to be a part of “One of Them Days,” although she had some reservations about fame. She praised Issa and Keke, saying, “You feel isolated by this beautiful energy, which makes you want to be a part of things and take risks.”
SZA also explained comments about how she felt like she wasn’t meant to be famous.
she said: “Some people are so used to being recognized that they have different mechanisms for approaching it. So Keke has this crazy network of mechanisms that all It’s kind of a flow, even when the cameras are on. ”
SZA continued: “For me, it’s a little hard to be too comfortable when you don’t really know what’s going on…I didn’t grow up famous. I grew up in the suburbs, went to a normal school, went to a normal university. I went and did normal chores, but eventually everything fell apart. Now, I’ve never been examined this way, like with binoculars.
She added, “I think sometimes it’s just a relief to put your shoulders down and know that you’re not in danger just because people you don’t know are looking at you.” ” he added.
“[Fame] It’s very strange and people are acting like it’s normal,” SZA stressed. “They’re like, ‘That’s what you signed up for,’ and I’m just like, ‘Actually, I didn’t even know what I was signed up for.'” After just a few songs, , I was grateful that people liked it and continued. Even in the case of this film, I literally just agreed to be a part of the film and had no idea that there would end up being a press scramble and that I would end up having to be on camera. . ”
Keke and SZA first met on “SNL” and immediately hit it off. Keke said, “I felt a bit of an atmosphere there.”
The women also opened up about how they all coped during “one of those days” and reflected on the friendships they built at the cost of death.
When SZA suggested “screaming” when you’re having a tough day, Issa admitted, “I tried that and I felt stupid.”
Keke said: “I’m scared of getting stuck in my vocal chords…I like watching shows and things that make me feel like I’m looking back on my life, and I’m one of those people and I’m a very positive person, so I’m like, “It’s brighter.” It’s like, “There’s a side.”
According to Keke, the film is about “unconditional love” between friends. She said: “I hope people watch this film and come together…We all have friends or that person we can lean on. For me, it’s a way to get through difficult times, it’s community.”
As for why SZA and Keke were perfect for the role, Issa said, “I could look at them all day…They’re so raw in their own right…They’re adorable to watch and you want to be in the room with them.” said.
“One of Them Days” will be released in theaters on January 17th.
