The phrase “Nobody Wants to Work Anymore” became something of a meme on the Internet, with many employers claiming that workers simply weren’t willing to work for the hours or wages they were offering.
In a sense, this was true. data It turns out that modern workers don’t want to work, they simply value their time more. This means they are less likely to take a job that they perceive to be inflexible, poorly paid, or unfairly treated.
In addition, the term “ghost job” was coined, with applicants claiming that companies were refusing to hire them while companies claimed that roles were difficult to fill.
As the labor market recovers, many workers are finding that companies are relying solely on their current limited workforce to handle the work of their entire team, rather than hiring new workers. I’m aware. This is also the case with recent videos. TikTok user and Joann Fabrics shopper @k4r4boo.
Where are all these Joanne Fabrics employees?
In a video with over 42,000 views, a TikToker shows off the aisles of a Joann Fabrics store. They are filled with boxes and it is impossible to navigate them.
“Why does it look like this?” the TikToker asks. “According to employees, the company has decided to continue sending the same amount of inventory, but to reduce the time it takes to stock.”
As the TikToker made her way through the store, she noticed every aisle was crowded and called the warehouse a “safety and fire hazard for customers and employees.”
“And I don’t want to hear a single word against these employees because this is progress. Yes, this is progress,” she concluded.
Joanne Fabrics is not alone
Other internet users claim aisles at popular chain stores are overcrowded and employees appear to be given too much work.
For example, one Dollar General’s stocking problem got so bad that employees created a video pleading with the company to help resolve the situation. Dollar Tree customers also showed us stores crammed with boxes, similar to the aforementioned Joann Fabrics store.
Additionally, stores like Target lock up a significant number of products and task employees with tasks such as interacting with customers, unlocking cases, and restocking shelves, making it difficult to maintain adequate in-store service. Some people point out that employees may be exhausted because they are not being well-received.
TikTokers react
In a TikTok DM conversation with the Daily Dot, the TikToker said she first became aware of the issue in July 2024 and only took the video to show how difficult it was for her sister, a wheelchair user, to navigate the store. said.
“I was looking for a specific item, and the store was supposed to have it in stock. It wasn’t on the shelf, so I asked an employee,” she said. “Every time I go back to the store, the boxes are configured differently and the employees are actively trying to clean them up, but they say they don’t have time.”
She also noted that she was told that emergency exits were blocked, and that employees told her behind the scenes that the problem was getting worse.
The TikToker went on to detail what solutions she would like to see implemented in stores.
“We would like to see businesses send less inventory to stores and increase operating hours to bring stores back to safe inventory levels,” she wrote. “As an artisan, Joanne’s is one of the few stores where I can sell fabric directly, and I would hate to see this company go out of business.”
In the meantime, she says she has been contacted by Joan’s social media team to investigate the situation.
