“His cutter was good,” Davey Martinez told reporters after the win over Colorado. “He used both sides, but the cutter was especially good today. The slider was effective, too, but he was pitching the ball low most of the time. The two-seam fastball was really good, pitching it low, so he was getting a lot of early swings and was able to strike out batters effectively with just the fastball.”
Corbin threw a total of 95 pitches over six innings.Scored 96 points in 4 innings 1⁄3 At the start of the previous), striking out eight of the 22 batters he faced, with his slider, sinker and cutter split almost evenly between them, totaling 12 strikeouts and 14 strikeouts.

You’re just trying to stay in the game against a good team. Our offense scored two runs and then I hit two home runs, but our defense played great behind me.” [catcher] Caibert [Ruiz] “I did a great job as a catcher tonight, but against this team, it’s just a matter of making sure you don’t put the ball in the middle of the plate. You want to be aggressive, but sometimes, you know, you throw a little too many pitches early on, but against a lineup that’s hitting a lot of home runs, you try to get around that.”

Crew Rolling:
Nationals prospect Dylan Crews, 22, ranked No. 4 in Baseball America’s Top 100, had 21 hits in 68 at-bats (.309) in 16 games before being promoted to make his MLB debut on Monday. On-base percentage .385 (5 walks, 4 hit by pitch), slugging percentage .529 (doubles, triples, 4 home runs)The club said in a press release announcing the call-up:
“He reached base safely in all 16 games,” they added. “…and [had] 13 out of 16 hits were successful.”
GM and president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo said on MLB Network Radio last week that Cruz was a talented hitter coming out of college. LSUHe was hoping to hone his skills in the minor leagues and work his way up to the major leagues.
“I think he’s better offensively at the Triple-A level than he is at the Double-A level,” Rizzo said of Cruz’s two minor league destinations this season, “and I think he’ll get even better as he gets to the higher levels and become an impact player offensively, defensively and as a baserunner. He’s a really well-rounded player and someone we can build around.”
Nationals captain Davey Martinez said before Cruz’s big league debut that his recent success at the plate has come down to timing his fastball accurately.
“We could tell at the beginning of spring training that he was a little behind,” the manager explained.
“He’s made some adjustments, he’s gotten better at dealing with the fastball and he’s started to back off a little bit.
“But I really liked his approach from Day 1. He’s aggressive, which is great. First, prepare to hit the fastball, and then don’t chase it. I know he’s got a good eye.”
“He goes for walks and he has to keep doing that.”
Cruz appeared in 100 games and 449 at-bats at Double-A and Triple-A, batting .270/.342/.451 with 21 doubles, six triples and 13 home runs.
What is his own opinion on the good period before he was called up?
“I think it’s just controlling the zone,” Cruz said, “and I think if you look back at history and the college and high school game, you tend to get a little bit better as the years go by.”
“Then, come August, I was seeing the ball well and putting up some good numbers. I was just trying to take advantage of that and bring it here.”
Cruz indirectly agreed with Rizzo’s view that the young outfielder is playing according to the level of competition he has faced so far.
“I think so too. Go to college, play in the SEC, go to college. World SeriesI need to step my game up a little bit and see what I’m capable of, and I think this one did a good job of that. So let’s see what happens here.”
“It felt great to step on the mound for the first time and compete with my guys,” Cruz said after going 0-for-3 with one walk in his first major league game on Monday.
Martinez said he thinks it’s best to get the initial issue out of the way and then move on.
The first game, even the first few games, it’s always about ‘letting the nerves go.’ Hopefully he can get his first hit today and go from there.”
Cruz recorded his first hit on Tuesday, hitting a 2-0 fastball from Yankees starter Gerrit Cole low and over center field off the base of the wall in left field for a double.
He hit a single, his first multi-hit game in major league history, scored his first run as a major leaguer in the sixth inning, and finished his second game with two hits and one run in four at-bats.
