In his final inning of service in 2024, Mackenzie Gore struck out. Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, and Bryce Harper all whiffed on 19 pitches against the Phillies, giving Gore a total of 91 pitches, giving up nine innings against 21 batters and giving up six scoreless innings.
“It’s always fun to bat out wide, especially when they’re really good hitters like they are,” the 25-year-old left-hander said after a 9-3 win over Philadelphia (Mr. Gore made no decision.).
“That’s a good ending.”
“That’s for sure,” coach Davey Martinez said of the way Gore ended the season.
“He wanted to get through that inning, and he did it in a way that left a mark, like, ‘Hey, I get this.’ This is me. Let’s go. ‘And that was a good way to end the match. ”
Gore started 31 games with a 4.04 ERA and 3.64 FIP, and started his 32nd game of the season with a 3.90 ERA, 3.53 FIP, 181 Ks (9.79 K/9), and 65 walks (3.52 BB/9). I finished it. in 166 1⁄3 IP.
“I thought it was solid,” Gore said of his third season in the majors. “Career-high number of innings.
“The number of strikeouts is a career high. I think there is still room for improvement. And we were able to overcome a tough challenge.”
“He should be really happy with himself,” Martinez told reporters after two of three games in the season’s final series (against the Nationals).
“We talk about how he’s a perfectionist and wants everything to be right. He comes home thinking, ‘Oh, I had a really good September and I finished strong.’ He should be going home.
“If he goes back and looks at the video and the mechanics, he needs to look at what he did last month and build from there.
“If we can keep him there and start him in the spring like he did, he’ll put us up with good numbers next year.”
He has put up very good numbers in his final seven starts of the season, with an article in the Washington Public Relations Department stating, “…1.55 ERA (7 ERA/40.2 ERA)…MLB for that span. He had the fourth-best ERA in the league. Game notes will be highlighted. “He struck out 42 batters, posted a WHIP of 0.91, and held opposing batters to a .181 batting average over that period.”
Coach Gore said, “I think I did a really good job in the end. I don’t know how many times I started, but I thought I did a good job.”
He struggled for long periods this season, but was able to adjust and right himself and finish on a good note.
“We were shooting ball about halfway through the year. It feels good to finish on a strong note and get out of this situation like we’ve been talking about and get some momentum going into next year. I was able to do that.”
Coach Martinez said he saw glimpses at the beginning and end of the season of a pitcher that Gore could be at his best.
“We have a guy who can win 18-20 games for us. He really can. He’s really good when he’s in the strike zone. He proved that today.”
Gore had 24 missed strikes on Saturday, 16 of which were between fastballs (nine) and curveballs (seven), and nine called strikes (six on FB, three on CB). . He allowed only three hits and one walk in six innings pitched.
“I thought we had a good combination and a good game plan. We played against them a number of times,” Gore said.
“So I know these guys. They’ve watched me a lot. I think I executed well when I needed to.”
In his past seven starts, Gore has lowered his ERA from 4.51 that year to 3.90.
“I love it,” Martinez said. “He worked hard to get back in the zone, the strike zone.
“He held the ball down for the most part, but we talked about that with him. His breaking ball was really effective, but, well, his ball was really exciting. It really is. Yo.”
“But I’m really proud of his finish. It’s going to be a great foundation for next year.”
