Gore unhappy with first half:
Trying to recover from a difficult situation 1⁄3He threw 90 pitches in one inning against St. Louis Cardinals Last week in the nation’s capital, Mackenzie Gore took the mound at Citi Field on Thursday afternoon and pitched four scoreless innings while allowing a walk and a double. New York Mets It will come off the board.
Then in the fifth inning, Gore allowed a double to Luis Torrens on a high fastball, then walked Jeff McNeil and Francisco Lindor in succession, setting up an RBI for Brandon Nimmo, who gave Washington a 3-0 lead with a bases-clearing double to put the team ahead, but the Washington starter lost 7-0 to the Nationals’ NL East rivals, clinching their third straight game in Flushing, Queens.
“I thought the first pitch was really good. [few innings]After the game, Manager Martinez praised Gore’s pitching and said:
” in [fifth] “He struggled in the first inning,” the manager continued, “but his pitch count went up. They fouled him off, 2-2, 3-2. Next thing you know, he was in the 90s after four innings. But he’s got the ability. His pitches are electrifying. So we’ve got to get him to understand, ‘Forward, forward, forward.'”
Mets hitters fouled off 25 of Gore’s 95 pitches in the fourth inning. 2⁄3 He threw 16 of 52 pitches, totalling 52 innings.
“Yeah, they didn’t get a hit until the fourth inning,” Gore said. Quote from MASN’s Bobby Blanco:
“But in all these big games, something’s going on. The same thing keeps happening. I keep walking batters in the first innings. I’m not pitching well. I’ve got to get better. … I just have to get better. I’m not pitching well. If I don’t get better, there will be some tough conversations to be had. Or I’ll just do what I have to do, like I did earlier in the year.”
“I feel like I can do better than what I’ve done in the first half of the season,” Gore said of his 19 starts. In ’98, he posted a 4.01 ERA, a 3.08 FIP, 37 walks (3.38 per nine innings) and 116 strikeouts (10.58 per nine innings). 2⁄3 IP.
“We still have our starters left. We still have a lot of baseball left to play. But I thought the first half was a very frustrating game at times.”
“He’s pitching great,” Martinez said when asked for his thoughts on Gore’s pitching ahead of the All-Star game. “He’s still learning. We’ve got to get him to understand that if he throws four or fewer pitches per at-bat, he’ll be OK.”
“He’s got to figure out how to get the kill. He gets deep in the count and then he gets the kill, but we’ve got to get him to finish early.”
No offense:
Davey Martinez’s team was defeated 7-0 by the New York Mets on Thursday, suffering its 10th shutout loss in 94 games.
Martinez told reporters during his post-game press conference Thursday afternoon that his team needs to turn things around at the plate and get runners on base.
“We had chances,” he said of the loss, in which he went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position and 13 on base. “We just couldn’t score. I need to perform better when I’m at bats with runners in scoring position. We talked about it yesterday. I always say when you have two or fewer outs and runners on second or third, it puts pressure on the pitcher. I think we’re putting a little too much pressure on them. I know they’re young, but we’re just putting too much pressure on them and not staying in the zone and trying to make something happen. But we’ve got to get better. We’ve got to get better.”
“Hitting-wise, our whole team is in a slump right now,” Martinez said.
“We are batting but we are not scoring runs. And the aim of the game is to score runs.”
“Hopefully, it’s just been a bad couple of days. We’ll go back to Milwaukee tomorrow and see if we can score some points.”
