Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the interim government, announced on Twitter that Taliban-led civil war-torn Afghanistan had sent a consignment of locally produced soft drinks to the United States for the first time.
Sharing a photo of the consignment on his microblogging site, he said the pomegranate soft drink was produced in a factory in the war-torn province of Herat.
No further details have been released about the first export consignment by the interim ruler.
The Afghan government’s economic department said in March that Afghanistan’s exports this year reached $1.9 billion, up 63% from last year.
“Our country’s biggest imports are linen fibers from various countries such as China and Pakistan, while our biggest exports are coal, dried fruits and carpets,” said ministry spokesman Abdul Salam Javad. toro news as they say.
In addition, the United Nations announced in early April that the number of Afghans living in poverty had nearly doubled to 34 million, as the country suffered from the collapse of the US-backed government and takeover by the Taliban.
After the US-backed republic collapsed in 2021, huge foreign subsidies were halted and aid programs were slashed as many countries refused to do business with Taliban authorities in Kabul.
These NGOs, which still provide vital aid, were hit further last December by a Taliban government order barring Afghan women from working.
The restrictions were extended this month to women Afghan staff at the UN, who said the UN faced “horrible choices” over whether to continue its aid programme.
