Pull up to Waldorf Astoria and you’ll find spectacular views everywhere. But the best is the panorama where guests greet as they raise their steps to the hotel lobby. Modern spaces with wooden panels and floor-to-ceiling windows make way for a vast, sea-facing terrace that undoubtedly marks a holiday.
My husband and I were greeted with cold towels and peppermint lemonade. We took it to the terrace and admired the stunning views. Meanwhile, my 7 month old daughter received a stuffed sloth named Petronilla.

I stayed in a one-bedroom king suite facing the sea with a plunge pool to provide ample space, both indoors and outdoors. In the main area, the vast tables are ideal for enjoying the indoor dining menu, and my new moving daughter used the luxurious living room area for raw practice.

In the second room, a king-sized bed faced floor-to-ceiling windows and connected to a spa-like bathroom with double vanity, a rainfall shower and another water closet. The bedroom also featured a separate seating area, desks and chairs, complimentary coffee, tea and a water station.

The wraparound outdoor space provided some relaxing areas, from the plunge pool to the oversized chinese lounge. From the balcony we had views of the multi-level pool, each morning, with the rising sun over the sea and the hotel cascades.
Dining at Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica Punta Cacique
The focus is on high-quality local ingredients and shines across many of the facility’s dining concepts. The fish are purchased from local fishermen, and the Wagyu beef from nearby farms is hand-selected by the hotel chef. The attention to detail never stops. All dishes are seasoned with salt, locally produced in ancient traditions of the Indigenous Korotega people.

Tikotica
This relaxed, refined restaurant is open all day long, but actually comes to life at dinner. My favourite dish was the fumita ($18), a sweet corn potage with melted cheese and smoked pepper sauce.
LA FINCA
The resort’s signature restaurant combines modern and traditional cuisine for a premium dining experience. I loved the artichokes roasted with Manchego and green plantains ($29) and the Rincon de la Vieja cocktail ($22), named after a nearby volcano.
Peacock’s Alley
This signature bar appears in every Waldorf Astoria around the world. All the small plates we tried here were delicious, but the show top was a Korotega cocktail ($20) made from rum, corn liqueur, coffee, vanilla and chocolate truffles.
Vida
Vida’s pizza, salad and sandwich menu is best enjoyed from chairs in the pool overlooking the ocean. Don’t skip guacamole with green mango and cashew nuts ($17).
Buena Nota Cafe
This cafe is a great morning option if you don’t want a full breakfast. It offers specialty coffee and homemade pastries, including Pink Guavalor ($13) and Golden Mango Eclair ($14).
Copo y cono
Get your own homemade ice cream, milkshakes or Pareta at this small store. We enjoyed a cup of Pravida chocolate topped with fresh mango ($9).
terrace
The property offers the best sunset views, and the terrace is a place to grab cocktails and champagne before dinner.
Indoor dining
Room service is available 24/7. This was helpful before an early morning flight. We had a breakfast burrito with beans, rice and plantains ($18) and arrived in the box so we could take it to the airport.

There is much to see for the Guanacaste area, especially nature lovers. Among the highlights of our time in Costa Rica was a boat trip through the wetlands of the Tempisk River, arranged by the hotel. We saw a wealth of monkeys, crocodiles, and numerous bird species and bats.
However, there are many ways to connect with nature and local culture without being far away from the hotel. Guided by hotel staff, the barista class provided an intriguing introduction to the various roasting and brewing techniques and the role coffee plays in everyday life. And a morning kayak adventure to the nearby beach was a great way to explore the bay and its marine life.
Location and logistics
Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica is located about 18 miles west of Daniel O’Douber Kiros International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, Costa Rica, and is easily accessible from US cities such as Los Angeles, Charlotte, Atlanta, New York and Houston.
The drive from the airport takes about 40 minutes, but don’t rely on the ride app. Uber is in this area, but there are not many drivers. Instead, you can take a taxi (fares vary, but usually fall between $60 and $100) or rent a car. Parking at the resort is free. The hotel also works with luxury car companies to provide luxury private airport transfers, with SUV rides at $195 each way.
