Last year, the Vikings selected running back Alexander Mattison over Dalvin Cook. He will be transferring from Mattison this year.
The Vikings told Mattison on Thursday, via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com: he will be released.
In 2023, Mattison signed a two-year, $7 million contract. His 2024 base salary of $3.3 million includes $2.75 million in full guarantee. They’ll be on the hook for that amount minus what he earns elsewhere.
The Vikings must be hoping Mattison will earn somewhere else, or close to it. That’s why they’re doing it now. They want him on the market early in the process.
The contract does not contain any triggers that would force us to move now to avoid cash obligations or minimize the impact of caps. They’re hoping to offset that by giving someone else a chance to sign him.
In 2023, he gained 700 rushing yards on 180 carries, averaging 3.9 yards per attempt. He added 192 yards on 30 receptions.
This move makes Ty Chandler the best option on the roster. The Vikings will also add one or more running backs through free agency or the draft.
