State media confirmed Wednesday that a 10-year-old Vietnamese boy has died after falling into a narrow hole in a concrete pile at a construction site on New Year’s Eve.
Rescuers spent nearly 100 hours trying to free Li Hao Nam from a 35-meter-long pole driven into the ground without success, online newspaper VnExpress said a local government official said. Quoted.
“The authorities have determined that the victim has died and are trying to retrieve the body for the funeral,” said Doan Thanh Buu, deputy chairman of the southern province of Dong Thap.
Nam was heard crying for help after falling into a hollow concrete pile 25cm in diameter at a bridge construction site in the Mekong Delta while searching for scrap metal with a friend.
Earlier Wednesday, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chin urged rescue teams and local authorities to mobilize all necessary equipment and troops, the government said.
