The body of Northern Arizona University professor Kim Yong-soo, who was reported missing with her husband during a kayaking trip in Sonora, Mexico, has been found.
A local fishing boat near Puerto Penasco found Kim’s dead body in the Gulf of California on Sunday. Verified GoFundMe page It was set up to raise funds to aid in the search for Kim and her husband Corey Allen.
“Today has been an incredibly sad day,” read Sunday’s update to the GoFundMe page. Despite so many amazing efforts by volunteers over the past three days to search for Youngsoo and Corey.”
Kim and Allen went missing late Saturday after not returning from a Thanksgiving kayaking trip in Mexico, CNN previously reported.
According to the organizers of the GoFundMe page, Sunday’s update from the Kim/Allen family said, “We are continuing our search for Corey and hopefully we can find him.
A civil protection agency in the Mexican state of Sonora tweeted that it had found a body with “characteristics similar to one of the two missing people” but did not identify it.
Northern Arizona University, where Kim was executive director of the forestry department, released a statement Sunday night confirming her death.
“Yeon-Su was a valued faculty member of the Forestry Department and a respected academic leader,” said university president Jose Luis in a statement.
“Her achievements and contributions to her academic field, the mission of our University, and the wider community have been many. Find the right time and place to celebrate.”
Authorities are still looking for Allen, according to a statement.
