There have been a lot of lively exchanges lately, especially at Inman. recent articles About door knocking. It’s fun to see people voice their opinions and take a stand.
Some of the disagreements are substantial given the fact that they are based on people’s personal experiences and that other people’s mileage may vary. , straight trolling.
and recent articles By Jessi Healey, she provides information and advice on how to deal with online trolls – the kind of people who always have something to say in comment sections and social media. Healey lays out rule one in her article. Do not feed the trolls.
The reality is that it can be difficult to ignore someone who is deliberately trying to incite an argument. I think you have to deal with the comment carnage that can happen when trolls are unleashed – and how to tell the difference between trolls and something else.
Do you know what a troll is?
I’m sure there are people out there who are in the habit of commenting on every story. In many cases, scrolling down reveals the regular names of people who comment frequently. Here at Inman, many individual writers have people who regularly comment on their stories because they either always agree or they always disagree.
check out Facebook again Instagram For Inman News, read the comments on the post. A lot of the comments you see are from people who don’t even have a subscription, and are apparently only replying to the headlines or blurb of posts.
So I ask: If I haven’t read the entire article, do I have to comment? Do uninformed comments count as trolling or just plain social media misbehavior? Or should the content author comment accordingly and convert that first comment to a dialog?
Why are people commenting?
Many people who comment on everything do so to spread their name. They want someone to message them or click on their profile to start following them.
That compulsion drives several different types of engagement.
- People who try to say shocking or controversial things can provoke more responses and encourage more engagement.
- Who posted some emojis just to process the comments.
As a creator, it’s important to target people who actually want to have a conversation with you. Making meaningful comments on my story, whether positive or negative, made for a very interesting conversation.
Completely ignoring or worse, closing comments that are 100% unfavorable does you and your viewers a disservice. I often hear the phrase, “If you don’t say nice things, don’t say anything,” but I don’t think it’s always true.
Negative comments are part of a larger discussion and may help everyone be more informed. Of course, sometimes it’s a troll. Whether you create blogs, podcasts, videos, or social media content, you need to know the difference.
Comments are part of the editing process and require a thick skin. If you’re a creator, try to engage with your audience and distinguish between rude or abusive comments and comments that take a different stance from yours.
as Healy I have written:
Legitimate complaints and negative feedback are not trolls. It can be upsetting to see negative comments about your business, but it does happen from time to time. Trolls take petty issues to extremes to see if their actions have no merit.
3 ways to improve your comments
If you’re a creative or real estate professional active on social media, here are three ways to improve your online discourse.
- In addition to posting on your own channel, comment on posts, stories and other content from friends, colleagues, brokers, mentors and entrepreneurs you work with on a regular basis. Set the tone for the conversation by providing meaningful and positive insights in your comments. It’s not just about improving your feed. It also improves your relationship with them.
- If they’re getting troll-like attention, block those accounts and report them if necessary. There is no reason to leave vulgar or abusive comments. A troll is one of hers that can poison the wells of other friends, fans and followers.
- Stay calm and cool when interacting with negative comments. Remember that if commenters are expressing opinions that differ from your own, they are providing you with an opportunity to demonstrate your expertise and negotiation skills. It gives you the opportunity to show that you know how to stay — this is something that will definitely earn you points from potential clients.
Trolling isn’t fun, but it would be a mistake to write off everyone you don’t feel online.
*And for those trolls who are convinced that ‘home-in’ should be ‘honing-in’, here is the explanation.
