In its quest for greener cinema, the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group (UFEG) today announced the launch of a new initiative called the GreenerLight program (a play on the terminology given when films are tried out in studios). .
The new plan is designed to incorporate sustainable practices and green foresight throughout the filmmaking process, from script development through production (including location decisions) and distribution. The studio also said the program will include viewing depictions of the action on-screen from an eco-friendly angle. , done by directors such as Kat Coiro, who used reusable containers to display characters instead of single-use plastic on screen.)
From now on, every movie that gets the green light on at the studio will include a sustainability plan that Universal insists on.
In a statement announcing the program, Universal Pictures President Peter Kramer said: UFEG is now expanding its commitment to sustainability from the development stage. Applying a comprehensive strategy throughout the filmmaking process, we strengthen our commitment to sustainability and continue to improve in all aspects. ”
Universal said the program was developed by the UFEG Film Strategy team in collaboration with the NBCUniversal Sustainability Department. As Cramer points out, Greenerlight is an extension of the studio’s existing sustainable production program, focusing on concerns such as energy efficiency, reducing fuel use, and donating food and set materials.
“UFEG’s GreenerLight program is the first of its kind and will lead the way in helping the industry make a difference on and off screen,” and advised on the studio’s eco initiatives.
The move was made possible by an investment in Amazon Studios ( Moxion Power, a battery-powered generator company (using machines in production instead of high-pollution models) and Netflix (partnering with GM to showcase EV vehicles in shows and movies).
