Over 1,500 schools expected to sign up Samhae (School Air Quality Monitoring for Health and Education) and helps provide important data to scientists studying air quality in classrooms.
This is expected to be the largest study of school air quality in the world.
experiment
SAMHE schools will be provided free of charge with advanced air quality monitors that measure carbon dioxide (CO2)2), Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC), Particulate Matter (PM), Temperature, Relative Humidity.
Through the SAMHE Web App, teachers and students can view data in a variety of interactive charts and graph formats to see how air quality changes over the course of hours, days, weeks and months.
The app also offers a variety of curriculum-linked activities and experiments with data, creating opportunities for students to become scientists and perform hands-on experiments with monitors.
SAMHE is designed for schools. Twenty “Co-Design Schools” collaborated with the team to design the project, and 120 “Pioneer Schools” helped beta test and refine his web app.
Air quality data from the monitors is not only available in schools, but also collated in national databases and made available to scientists.
Ministry of Education
The project is led by the University of York, Imperial College London and the Stockholm Environmental Institute at Cambridge University.
6 research institutes We are working together to deliver the project with funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and support from the Department of Education.
SAMHE enables students to interact with real-world data about their immediate environment, gives them agency to take informed action, and provides opportunities to collaborate with scientists and contribute to important research.
Dr. Henry Burridge, SAMHE Project Leader, Imperial College London, said:
fun and engaging
Dr Sarah West, School Engagement Lead for SAMHE, Stockholm Environmental Institute, University of York, said:
“SAMHE monitors and apps have provided the Y4/5 science group with a wealth of data for investigation and analysis. There is great excitement,” said Elangeni School, part of the SAMHE Pioneer Schools program.
