Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign on Sunday touted endorsements of the president from more than two dozen Republicans, including some who served in former President Donald Trump’s administration.
About 30 Republicans have joined the new “Republicans support Harris.” The initiative was launched on Sunday. The list includes Stephanie Grisham, who served as White House press secretary under President Trump, and Olivia Troye, a national security adviser under Vice President Mike Pence. It also includes Chuck Hagel and Ray LaHood, who served as Republican cabinet secretaries under President Barack Obama.
By publicly breaking with the Republican presidential nominee, these officials have become targets for attack from President Trump.
“We must purge our party of those who oppose our nominee and make it harder for a popular Republican President to win against a far-left fanatic. Geoff Duncan is a loser who is collapsing under his own steam,” Trump wrote. The truth of society He said Saturday, referring to the former lieutenant governor of Georgia, who has endorsed Harris.
The Harris campaign’s new push to target Republican voters comes two weeks after President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed Harris. Since then, the vice president has enjoyed an early surge of support in the form of record donations, volunteer registrations and a surge in the polls, helping him close the gap in approval ratings with Trump.
Despite Harris’ initial momentum, she and Trump remain in a close race that could be decided by a slim margin in November’s election. That statistical closeness is exactly why Harris’s campaign is targeting undecided Republican voters who could be persuaded to oppose the party’s nominee.
“Donald Trump’s MAGA extremism is harmful to millions of Republicans who no longer believe that the party of Donald Trump represents their values and will vote against him again in November,” Austin Weatherford, the Harris campaign’s national director of Republican outreach, said in the memo.
“Vice President Harris and our campaign are working hard to earn the support of Republican lawmakers who care about defending our democracy and restoring decency,” he added.
The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
