At the Crockett Lodge in Star City, West Virginia, just outside of Morgantown, I experienced something I’d never experienced before: 12 of the 15 people I spoke to did not vote. They have very interesting opinions about the current state of modern politics, but they don’t believe their vote matters.
Upon entering the store, I realized immediately that my attire was inappropriate: I was wearing a smart button-down shirt and lucky slacks I’d purchased at my local TJ Maxx, but what I should have been wearing was an old, beat-up 2005 Troy Vincent Eagles jersey.
Glancing sideways, the first man I spoke to was named Locke. “They’re both criminals,” he told me. “So what’s the difference?”
4 ways Trump can achieve a 96% chance of winning
I looked up at the attractive bartender, who was in her early 30s, and asked, “Are you going to vote?”
“No,” she said. “What’s the problem?”
A few minutes later, I saw a man walk in wearing an American flag T-shirt that said “I’m a Patriot.”
I said, “Hey, I saw your shirt.” I explained that I go around complaining about people’s politics for Fox. He was on board. He loves Harris and is all in. He told me, “I pray every night that that disrespectful son of a bitch, Trump, doesn’t win.”
Harris, Trump hold intense rallies in key battleground states as post-debate “final stages” begin
Micahir told me that after 30 years working in the gas industry, he thinks Harris has taken a new turn when it comes to fracking.
Just as I was about to investigate further, his wife came back from the bathroom and closed the door. “I’m not stupid,” I said. “Thanks, have a good evening.”
The next people I talked to were Mike and Zach, both in their mid-20s. Mike votes, Zach doesn’t. I said, “Zach, why don’t you vote?”
“It doesn’t matter. I live in West Virginia and Trump is going to win, so what does it matter?”
I asked, “Who will you vote for?”
And then this motherfucker, as if he were on a cable TV news show, says, “So, considering what life was like from 2016 to 2020 compared to now, who would you vote for?”
Trump-Vance has conducted a combined 48 interviews since last month, compared with just eight for Harris-Waltz.
I said, “You’re making a stronger argument for Trump than any of your MAGA buddies here.”
As I listened to them, I asked if I could buy them a glass of Irish whiskey. They asked for Lemon Drops, but I didn’t know what those were. I told them frankly that this could be part of the problem.
No matter which way you leaned, it didn’t stop. You kept hearing, “What’s the point of voting?”
One of these men, Joe, had a can of Natty Ice and said that if he were to vote, he would vote for Harris because he was poor and Harris would give him money.
I asked him if he thought she might make things more expensive.
He said he didn’t know, but he thought she would give him more.
Believe me, I’m not trying to disparage this wonderful Crockett Lodge or the voters, and mostly non-voters, I’ve met there. 10 out of 10 people recommend it. But I do wonder if Kamala Harris or Donald Trump can move these people.

They feel forgotten and left behind. Rock told me, “I just want to sit on my porch and smoke some marijuana quietly.”
The last couple I spoke to were Chris and Nicole, who are expecting their first child in a few months. They’re both Trump supporters, and while they watched the debate and thought Harris was a great choice, they said it’s still hard to make ends meet and pay the bills.
In a way, I envy them; they have a newborn baby on the way who adores them and is obsessed with them. I have a 14-year-old son who loves me, but regularly teases me and his mother in ways that would make Don Rickles blush. But it’s a good thing.

I hate hearing about people not voting. Sure, it might not affect the final outcome in Morgantown, West Virginia, but it will affect it 50 miles down the road in Pennsylvania. Are these people really that different?
If a candidate can inspire the people they met in Morgantown, they’ll win in a landslide victory on Nov. 5. But so far, they’re not impressed.
