An aide to President Donald Trump, Walt Nauta, was unable to find a local Florida attorney to represent him in a criminal case. case protested against him and the former president over the retention of classified government documents.
Nauta’s arraignment, which took place Tuesday in Miami federal court, was postponed until July 6 to give him more time to hire a local attorney to represent him, as required by court rules.
Nauta did not appear at Tuesday’s abbreviated hearing because his flight out of New Jersey was cancelled, out-of-state attorney Stan Woodward told magistrate Edwin Torres, according to reports. Court submission.
Woodward, who has a law firm based in Washington, D.C., declined to comment when asked by CNBC why his client had not yet hired a Florida attorney.
Nauta’s inability to hire a Florida attorney came after both men were indicted earlier this month for allegedly storing classified documents at Trump’s Palm Beach mansion and hiding them from federal officials. It reflects the initial difficulty Mr. Trump himself had in finding a lawyer to represent him in the case.
Trump, who is running for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, pleaded not guilty to an arraignment earlier this month.
