Former U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador Ronald Johnson has been selected by President-elect Trump to be the next U.S. ambassador to Mexico.
Like many other candidates, Trump announced the news on his “Truth” social network.
“Ron will work closely with the great Secretary of State candidate Marco Rubio to advance our nation’s security and prosperity through a strong America-first foreign policy,” he wrote.
“During my first term, Ron served as Ambassador to El Salvador and worked tirelessly with El Salvadoran authorities and our team to reduce violent crime and illegal immigration to historic lows,” he added.
Johnson, a former Central Intelligence Agency and U.S. Army Green Beret, will hold one of the high-profile diplomatic jobs in the Trump administration.

President Trump has threatened to impose hefty tariffs on Mexico unless it does more to stop illegal immigrants and drugs from crossing its southern border. He has also threatened to impose tariffs on Canada and China.

In his announcement, President Trump said Johnson would help “fight immigration crime, stop the illegal flow of fentanyl and other dangerous drugs into our country, and make America safe again.”
