MTA Chairman Richard Davey also joined Eyewitness News to thank the workers.
“My message today is to say thank you to our 47,000 workers. Today is Transportation Worker Appreciation Day across the United States, but we also celebrate it here in New York. We have many great employees like Courtney. We’re also focused on the safety of our employees and passengers. Along the way, we saw police officers out and cameras out to catch people trying to do something bad in the system. We are also investing in homeless assistance and services. For people who are emotionally unstable,” Davey said. “So anything that’s happening in the city will impact our systems, so we need to be prepared.”
Recently, there have been some very social and worrying incidents within public transport. Last week, there was a shooting incident on the A train, and last month, a conductor was slashed in the neck while on the job.
Mr Davey called for the need to remove weapons and firearms from the transport system.
He also said a mental health team consisting of two MTA police officers and a mental health clinician is working to get people the help they need.
Mr Davey said more than four million people used the transport system in the last week and it was very safe with very few incidents of crime.
