Amman: TikTok is in talks with Jordan on Monday to lift its post-December ban after a video posted on the app was accused of “inciting murder and chaos.”
Jordanian authorities suspended the app’s use in the country on December 16. This is after a senior police officer was killed and others injured during protests over fuel prices in the south of the country.
In a statement, TikTok said: “Through continued conversations with the authorities, we believe we can reach a solution that will allow TikTok to continue serving its millions of users in Jordan.
“We are also committed to keeping TikTok a safe and positive environment for our global community,” the statement added.
In December, drivers went on strike in several states in southern Jordan over high fuel costs.
At the time, government spokesman Faisal Al-Shabour accused the app of “publishing tons of videos that incite murder and chaos.”
Authorities reported at the time that 49 security personnel were injured and 44 arrested during the protests.
Demonstrations broke out as fuel prices in the kingdom nearly doubled year-on-year.
According to the World Bank, Jordan is heavily indebted and faces an unemployment rate of around 23%. –AFPMore
