WILLOUGHBY, Ohio — The art of thrifting has been around for a long time, but have you ever considered it as a way to save money on your holiday purchases?
With help from recycled content creator Dina Younis, 3News’ Kiera Cotton visited Volunteers of America Thrift in Willoughby for tips on how to make the holiday season special without breaking the bank.
Younis, who has been frugal all her life, says her first rule of thrift is to visit local stores as often as possible.
“If you go once and don’t find anything, you can’t give up. You have to be persistent because you never know what you’ll find,” Younis explains.

With the holiday season fast approaching, if you want to save money on the perfect gift, it’s a good idea to shop wisely. Make a list of the people you want to shop for and brainstorm ideas about what they might like and their budget.
Eunice took Ms. Cotton on shopping trips and helped her find gifts for children, teens, and adults. They started with the kids section, which Younis says is the easiest group to shop for.
“Thrift stores have hundreds of toys, games, and puzzles,” Yunis says.
They were able to get branded toys and activities, some brand new, at a fraction of the retail price.
If you have young children who don’t understand exactly what thrift shopping is, or older children who may look down on stores, second-hand shopping is a great way to teach kids basic values. It’s an opportunity, Younis says.
“There’s a lot of value in inculcating them,” Younis says. “Younger kids might not know the difference, but I tell them, ‘You’re buying this secondhand, you’re buying this at the thrift store, you’re going to wear this.’ I like Facebook Marketplace. ”
If you’re scared of thrifting for gifts, don’t worry, most stores have gift accessories like wrapping paper and gift bags. We also have a selection of holiday decorations.
