Jerry previously told People magazine that after his diagnosis, staying in Indiana and being closer to his family became a priority.
He explained: “When you get news like that, and after a few days or weeks the shock wears off and you pick yourself up and realize what’s important to you, that’s when you start to move on. I hope so. Looking back now, I can see that it had a big influence on my decision, and I think it probably had a big influence on Teresa’s decision as well.”
Nist insisted that the diagnosis “was not a factor in ending the relationship, at least for me.”
She further added, “If it was something on his side, maybe, I don’t know. But no, it wasn’t a factor in ending the relationship. Part of it was the distance. It was, but that’s really all I’m saying.
The couple had planned to sell their home and move to South Carolina, but Turner changed his mind.
”[But] “Jerry, after he got home, he kind of changed his mind. He said, ‘No, let’s do six weeks here and six weeks there,'” she said. And I didn’t want to do that. Actually, I wanted to have a house with you. I wanted the joy of living in a house and designing a house together. I really thought it was going to be phenomenal. I was really looking forward to it. ”
Although they were looking for a home online, Nist believes they would have kept that momentum if they had looked for a home in person.
“We looked at the house a lot and I think it started to get less and less like we were never going to agree, and then the emails stopped. [and] We weren’t looking anymore,” she explained.

As for Turner’s diagnosis, Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia is the transformation of white blood cells into cancer cells.
Turner said in an interview: So it weighs heavily in every decision I make. It felt like 10 tons of concrete had fallen on me. And I was a little bit negative for a while. I didn’t want to admit it. ”
He recalled telling Teresa the news: “Yes, it was difficult for me, but the conversation was short; [she was] I was a little surprised by the news. It’s very understandable. ”
