The long-running huddle between Chinese and Russian leaders is a bromance unfolding in parallel universes. It may look like the rise of a new evil empire, but this is the reality. An increasingly desperate Putin and an opportunistic regime in Beijing.
For starters, let’s take a look at the discrepancy between the reality of Putin’s war in Ukraine and the play taking place in Moscow this week.
Many experts predicted the failure of the Russian winter offensive. The Russians shattered their forces, did not accomplish much, and were ill-prepared for the expected counterattack from Ukrainian forces in the spring.
Putin attacked anyway, proving once again that he was as bad a commander-in-chief as he is in modern memory.
Despite the lack of bragging results, Putin began bragging about occupied Mariupol with a bang in the middle of the night. Putin then mocked the International Criminal Court’s war crimes indictment. In fact, one of his cronies (probably half-joking) threatened to blow up the courtroom with a hypersonic missile. Putin ended the long weekend by welcoming Xi Jinping to Moscow.
Xi tells Russian President Vladimir Putin that China is willing to play a ‘constructive role’ in Ukraine peace talks
Beyond the absurdly grandiose statements, there are still many questions about what Putin wants from China.
Does Putin really think Xi Jinping will help him in his war of aggression? Russia has been fighting for a year, what has China contributed to this fight? Chinese companies transport weapons to Russia Ukrainian intelligence has seen nothing on the battlefield, although there have been reports that it does.
And the reality is that China’s friendship comes at a price. Just ask Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and other countries that have had to make friendly deals with Beijing.
Putin is in even worse shape. He has barely negotiated with Xi from a position of strength.
From Beijing’s perspective, China wins no matter what the outcome. They fear Putin will lose, but not so much as to take real risks to help him. They are also willing to replace Russia’s influence in Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Latin America, wondering how Putin will take advantage if he stumbles badly.

These powers were entirely meant to take advantage of the most incompetent, reckless and gullible Biden they’ve faced since Barack Obama. . For one thing, Xi Jinping hopes that any hard-line arguments against Beijing will be all caps and no disrespect. After all, this regime has simply refused to take money from the CCP and hold it accountable for a string of human rights violations on its list.
Now is the time for the United States to put maximum strain on its relationship with Beijing. In Europe, many Europeans have already stepped up. Now is the right time to set NATO on the path to success in the years to come. In the Indo-Pacific, the United States needs to get serious about strategic deterrence and conventional forces, guided by overwhelming naval power that makes China reluctant to try anything.
The United States and its friends and allies must come together to mitigate once and for all the risks China poses to our economy, security, and way of life.
