Many of us have thought about the mysteries of the universe with childlike wonder. We ask questions like why ships disappear in the Bermuda Triangle. How were these statues brought to Easter Island? Or what killed the dinosaur? But I was never clear about who the mothers were and whether celebrating their unique sacrifice deserved a holiday. Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and here’s a little tutorial on why she should pay tribute to the women who made her life just a little bit better while eating one sandwich at a time.
A mother is a woman who is lovingly and devotedly devoted to her child, either by birth or adoption. It’s not complicated. No confusion. And if the mother drops the ball, it’s clearly a problem, a loss that only emphasizes her need. But most of the time, motherhood is such a noble sacrifice for most women that you can’t have that kind of commitment in your cards. That is why the current erasure of motherhood is uncomfortable and disgusting.
Talking about humiliating cultural appropriation, slurs like ‘breast-feeders’ and ‘breast-feeders’ do not create equality, they only erase unique contributions. Because what we women do, to nurture life within ourselves and nurture life day by day, the biological man cannot do. It expresses unique femininity.
And no matter how great their fathers are, or could be, that doesn’t make them mothers.

The History Channel tells us that honoring mothers is as old as the ancient Greek and Roman cultures and as fresh as the flowers sold to mark the day. The holiday first appeared in 1908 and has been preprinted on calendars since 1914 as a shopping reminder.

Over time, Mother’s Day mothers have come to hate commercialism. We have to wonder how she feels about the blatant assault on her motherhood itself, with the timing to hijack her memories.
Take Time magazine felt compelled to say, “What I really want for Mother’s Day is to have less mothers,” and wrote a terrible article titled “Flowers and Cards Are Nice.” I would rather have autonomy. The author worried that motherhood might happen on Mother’s Day, the first since the end of Roe v. Wade. Family planning makes similar tone-deaf statements each year on days designed to honor life choices.

Is Mother’s Day really a day to talk about not being a mother? The soapbox also has her 364 days to choose from.
I have four children and a story that every mother has: broken limbs, hastily put together projects, countless meals. Sometimes those definitions can be sketchy when you’re in a hurry. Being a great mother is a passion, a goal, a hope, a daily occurrence that, like the sun, a mother rises to try again. It’s not important to be perfect every day. It appears every day.
In my job as a mother, attendance records are very important.
It’s a pretty glorious stage in life when you know all the answers to your homework. Eventually, the math becomes too difficult and kids are convinced you don’t understand their stress. But as she tackles adult problems, she becomes smart again (even if she doesn’t know all the answers).

Neither my mother nor mother-in-law are here anymore for me to pay my respects in person. Luckily for me, my 91 year old grandmother has taught me a lot. All are irreplaceable in a family’s life story. I owe them more than thanks, but I humbly offer them.
If you can’t say anything nice about your mother on Mother’s Day, let’s take a little break and let the rest of us have some great moments. Frankly, mothers can take advantage of peace and quiet.
