Directed by Matt ReevesBatmanStar Wars Episode I: The Last Jedi starring Robert Pattinson was released in March 2022. A sequel was then announced and fans have been waiting for the sequel since then. Matt Reeves has finally shared an update, saying that the team is currently busy with the script and filming will begin next year. He also revealed that while the Penguin, played by Colin Farrell, will return, the sequel will not feature any supernatural villains like the Gentleman Ghost.
Speaking to SFX magazine, Matt said, “We’re shooting it next year and we’re finishing up the script at the moment. Colin (Farrell) will be in it too. I’ve shared the script with DC and the studio and they’re really excited about it.”

The director added:penguinThe Batman, which sees Colin Farrell play a Gotham City villain, is a “gateway” to the upcoming Batman sequel, and is linked to “how the next movie begins.” Many DC Comics fans had hoped that the filmmakers would add supernatural villain Gentleman Ghost to the sequel, but Reeves revealed that that won’t happen as it wouldn’t fit with his realistic interpretation of the comics. He said, “We may push the boundaries of fantasy, but it’s not going to be completely fantastical. It’s meant to feel pretty realistic.”
Reeves also revealed that the next film will “dig into a much larger story of deeper corruption and go further than we could have anticipated in the first film.”
‘Batman 2‘ was originally scheduled for release in October 2025, but will now be released on October 2, 2026.
