Bangkok: At least one Thai national has died in a fire that engulfed a casino complex in Poipet, Cambodia, on Wednesday.
Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said at least 34 Thais were killed after a fire broke out at the Grand Diamond City Hotel Casino in Poipet, a city bordering Thailand, around 11:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday. said he was injured.
The victim died after falling from a height.
“Many of the injured suffered burns, smoke inhalation and broken bones. They were being treated at a hospital in Sa Kaew Province, Thailand,” he said in a statement.
Anutin added that Thai authorities are ready to send a forensic team to help identify the victims.
Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Prayuth has ordered relevant authorities to coordinate and provide necessary assistance to all affected Thais.
Located on the Cambodian-Thailand border, Poipet is known for its casinos where many Thais work in the city’s gambling industry.
