Swift celebrated Perry’s special night by singing and dancing to a medley of hits including “ET,” “Teenage Dream” and “California Gurls.”
The pair had a falling out several years ago but have since reconciled, and they famously appeared together as burgers and fries in Taylor’s 2019 music video for “You Need to Calm Down.”
And in 2020, Perry told Howard Stern that the musicians are now “very close.”
“I’m so grateful that we’ve made amends publicly and can be an example of redemption for young girls,” she said. “I’ve always wanted the best for her, and now we can talk about the happiness we want for each other.”
Perry also joined Swift on her Eraser tour in Sydney in March last year, where she shared a video of them singing “Bad Blood,” a song she said she was inspired by.
The VMAs were also a big night for Taylor, with Swift taking home awards for Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Pop, Song of the Summer, Best Director and Best Editing.
She broke Beyoncé’s record for most “Moonmen”: Beyoncé set the bar at 25, while Taylor now has 30.
Swift is also the first artist to win Video of the Year five times.
