Taylor Swift expressed sadness late Friday after one of her fans, a young woman, fell ill and passed away at the venue of her first Elas tour concert in Brazil.
On her Instagram Stories, a note in handwritten font reads, “I can’t believe I’m writing these words, but I’m devastated to say that I lost a fan before my show tonight.” It was dark. “I can’t even begin to tell you how devastated I am over this. There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was incredibly beautiful and too young.”
The fan has been identified as Ana Clara Benevidez Machado, 23. Machado said she felt unwell at a venue in Rio de Janeiro and was seen by medical personnel, where she was rushed to the hospital for treatment, where she reportedly died at Saragudo Filho Hospital.
One of the concert organizers, Time for Fun, Confirmed Details of Machado’s passing.
“I can’t talk about this from the stage because I would be overwhelmed with sadness,” she continued, confirming that she would not address the tragedy in future performances. “Right now, I feel this loss deeply and would like to express my heartbreak to her family and friends. When we decided to take this tour to Brazil, we knew that something like this would never happen. I didn’t expect that.”
While “Rest in Peace Ana” trended on Twitter, fans shared stories about the situation at Estadio Nilton Santos, saying the heat was overwhelming. At one point, Swift caught on video “There are people here who need water,” he said, pointing to a group of fans waving water bottles, which the venue reportedly forbade.
In the video, Swift herself acknowledged the sweltering heat at the stadium, saying, “I’m sorry, but it’s just so hot, so if anyone needs water when it’s this hot, I really do.” said.
The Swifties arrive for the next show on Saturday Confirmed Water bottles were allowed at the venue, and fans were installed on the floor of the venue.
