Like most conservatives, I was overjoyed to see the Supreme Court nullify race-based admissions and President Joe Biden’s student loan debt relief last month. I also share the belief that skin color should not affect college applications, and that people who do not have student loans should not have to bear the burden for those who do. increase. But if we don’t take the lead on the issue of higher education reform, I believe the Left will continue to pursue radical policies in other ways.
The Supreme Court’s ruling deals with issues stemming from a much larger disease affecting colleges and universities across the nation. It is eroding the true function of higher education: developing sophisticated, well-educated individuals for the real world.
Instead, our university has strayed from its original purpose, over half of our students are over $30,000 in debt, and we have evolved into a liberal collective consciousness.
DR. Jordan Peterson launches online university to counter left-wing bigotry: system ‘ripe for extreme upheaval’
When I graduated in 1985, annual tuition for public four-year institutions was about $1,200. Now that figure is over $9,500. The staggering rise in higher education costs over the last few decades has been largely driven by two factors, with inflation a third factor.
If conservatives want to fix the deficiencies of higher education, they need to get involved in solving the problem.
First, society has obliged the younger generation to attend college in order to succeed in life. The third-party payment model we employ makes it possible for young people to fall into debt with little understanding of the tangible value of a degree or the tiered return on investment that various fields of study offer graduates. There is a nature. With over 2 million individuals now graduating with a bachelor’s degree each year, institutions have no incentive to cut costs because they know there will always be a buyer.
Second, university spending has exploded due to campus theme parks and bloated administration. In 2021, the U.S. Trustees and Alumni Council released a meticulously detailed 52-page report on college runaway spending. Using data from the Ministry of Education, the report found that spending on student services, including amenities, has increased significantly, with the number of administrators significantly outstripping instruction.
Critics often challenge my claims on two important points that need to be addressed. First, the federal government should increase college subsidies to reduce the cost of admission. It is a recipe for accelerating the devastation we are witnessing today, and an example of Einstein’s definition of madness.
And second, student services are vital to student success and well-being. Some services, such as career counseling, may provide value, but data show little correlation between spending on student services and graduation rates.
As a former member of the university board, I have observed not only the steady increase in the cost of post-secondary education, but also the astonishing forced progressive ideological shift in schools and other schools across the country. bottom.
The president abused his powers to impose his political views on faculty and students, with adverse consequences if students did not check them. Since then, things have only gotten worse.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies permeate every government branch, jeopardize free speech on campuses, and make universities a breeding ground for un-American, cultic behavior.
The disturbing ideological drift of American universities is a threat to the nation’s future, both philosophically and concretely. The principles and rights enshrined in our Constitution are rapidly becoming incompatible with the progressive doctrines prevalent on campuses today.

And when greater attention is paid to social justice theory than to practical instruction, the quality of education students receive suffers. As a physician, I am particularly concerned that medical schools are engaging in an awakened social experiment by relaxing application requirements and demanding diversity representation in the name of fairness.
We can continue to document, report, and condemn the illiberal radicalization of higher education, but without action, intellectual decay and the rejection of conservative principles will accelerate.
I will speak out about awakened progress in colleges, lead several bills to combat progressive riots on campus, and bring together key legislators, supportive outside groups and students to work together. hosts the annual Free Speech Roundtable on Congress Campus.

In different ways, everyone agrees that reform is desperately needed, and the appetite for change is growing. Conservatives must get to the table and address this issue if they want to restore college excellence and avoid losing support from younger voters motivated by the sheer cost of getting a college degree. must be
If we miss the moment, we will allow the Left to take control of the issue, and determine the direction of future policy, with disastrous consequences.
