Following the Trump administration’s decision to freeze $2.2 billion grants and contracts In Harvard’s case, Kerr appeared at a postgame press conference on Tuesday night. Harvard Basketball Shirtinforms him of his support for the tormented institution.
“Is something going on?” Kerr joked, prompting a laugh from the reporters. Then he got serious.
“[Harvard coach] Tommy Amarker was a friend and he sent me a shirt. I thought today was the perfect day to wear it,” Carr explained. “I believe in academic freedom. Universities need to run institutions that appear appropriate, not threats from government. This supports Harvard.”
He did not write words about the freeze: “That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard, but it’s a bit of a par for the course now. How to go, Harvard. How to stand up to the bully.”
Political background
A federal funding freeze came after Harvard President Alan M. Gerber said the university would not comply with new government requests related to its anti-Semitism efforts on campus. Gerber accused them of trying to enforce compliance under financial pressure rather than promoting cooperation.
“This is about control, not solutions,” Gerber wrote in a statement. “We spoke to the administration through our lawyers. We don’t accept their terms.”
Earlier this month, the federal task force began considering Harvard’s contract, part of a broader investigation into anti-Semitism on university campuses. Harvard’s aggressive federal contracts totalled over $9 billion.
Carr’s long-standing stance
Carr’s support for Harvard is consistent with his history of political involvement. The Warriors coach, who was assassinated in Beirut while her father was the university president, has long criticized Trump and supported Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
He also gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention, where he defended education freedom and denounced government overreach.
Kerr made his remarks after his team defeated the Memphis Grizzlies in the Play-In Tournament and secured the 7th seed in the Western Conference playoffs.
