The final results of the 36th Berien RESA Science Olympiad have been tallied.
On a gloomy Friday morning, after participating in 23 STEM-related events across the Lake Michigan College campus, St. Joseph High School and Upton Middle School won their annual contest. The high school team won 10 individual games, and the Upton team won 14 of his games.
Lakeshore High School finished second and won four events, while Lakeshore Middle School won two events and placed second in the middle school division. Berrien Springs saw him finish third in both the middle school and high school divisions.
The St. Joseph HS, Upton MS, Lakeshore HS, Lakeshore MS and Burrien Springs MS each advance to the state finals on April 22 at Michigan State University.
Berrien RESA Student Activities Coordinator Tonya Snyder said the day was a success, even though the ceremony had to be canceled due to weather.
“Today it’s all about practical science, kind of showing the science of the world around you. You can explore that part of the science by building devices, or you can just take a test and see what happens to the human body or electricity. Just to see how well you know how it works,” Snyder said. “Lake Michigan had a really nice group of about 200 students taking over the college.”
Participating schools include Burrien Springs Middle and High School, Brandywine High School, Buchanan Middle and High School, Lakeshore Middle and High School, Mildred C. Wells Academy, Ring Lardner Middle School, River Valley Middle School, Upton Middle School, and St. Joseph High School. It is included. School and Watervliet Middle School.
