In a news release, St. John’s Lutheran Church and School Communications Director Jan Sleight shared information about the recent financial fair held at the school by the United Financial Credit Union. Students from St. John’s Lutheran Middle School and from her three other local parochial schools participated in the program.
The event was hosted by UFCU Auburn branch manager Robin Naugl. Our goal is to help them succeed in life. ”
The program, called Money Masters, recreates real-life situations in real cities. Students start by choosing a profession and its accompanying salary from a fishbowl. Then, spin the potter’s wheel to determine your family status (married/single and number of children). Students are then required to visit a series of stations and determine routine expenses such as housing, transportation, insurance, food, clothing, and fun things like toys and vacations.
St. John’s Principal Brad Massey said: It was nice to see her 5th through 8th grade students move in with other students and learn about budgeting. “I’ve learned that being an adult is really hard,” said Hannah, her fifth grader who attends St. John’s. too high! “
St. Bridgit’s Catholic School brought in 22 middle school students. “It’s great to have the opportunity to give students a chance to see how their day-to-day finances affect their lives,” said teacher Chris Wakeman.
The Zion Lutheran School in Auburn was attended by 19 students in grades 6 through 8, accompanied by Patti Hem. ”
“Family is too expensive,” says Cayden, a Zion student.
The Good Shepherd of Midland brought in nine junior high school students with their teacher, George Kellerman.
The event was the brainstorm of St. John’s teacher Alleyne Massey, who began researching and planning the event after realizing that many young people lacked money management skills.
In addition to staff from multiple branches of the United Financial Credit Union, volunteers from several local businesses were at the station, including Melissa Jammer of Chronicled Keepsakes Photography, Lori Carroll of Harbor Light Photography, and Kevin Sims of U-First Financial.
