A spacewalk planned by the Russian space agency Roscosmos was canceled after a coolant leak was discovered from the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft currently docked at the International Space Station.
NASA’s Rob Navias said on NASA’s TV broadcast that the leak was “pretty significant.” Live images on air showed liquid erupting from the Soyuz. Navias said the leak was first observed around 7:45 p.m. ET.
The Soyuz spacecraft is docked in the Russian segment of the ISS.
Navias said the cause of the coolant leak was “unknown, and the impact is unknown at this time. Russian administrators continue to look at the data and consult with both NASA administrators and engineers.” .
He said the astronauts inside the space station were “never in danger”.
“No decisions have been made regarding the integrity or next course of action of Soyuz MS-22,” he added in closing NASA-TV’s coverage of the canceled spacewalk.
The Soyuz MS-22 is scheduled to carry NASA astronaut Frank Rubio and two Russian astronauts to the ISS on September 21 and return to Earth in late March.
