South Korean President Yun Seok-Yeol declared martial law in a surprise late-night televised speech on Tuesday, accusing the opposition party of sympathizing with North Korea and controlling the parliament.
“I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of the North Korean communist army, to eradicate the despicable pro-North Korean anti-national forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of the people, and to protect the free constitution. “I have given the order,” Yun said on the country’s YTN news channel, Reuters reported.
