Shakira is on the mend. The “Hips Don’t Lie” hitmaker’s life fell apart in 2022 after her highly publicized split from soccer player Gerard Pique. The former couple, who were together for nearly 11 years and have two sons together, Milan, 11, and Sasha, nine, split after Pique allegedly cheated on Shakira with her current girlfriend, Clara Chia Martí.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Shakira, 47, reflected on how she recovered from the breakup, describing it as the darkest time of her life. For Shakira, the pain felt like a stab in the heart. She said the pain became unbearable, to the point where she “couldn’t function” at times.
She said: “It felt like someone had drilled a hole in my chest. The sensation was real, almost physical. It felt like there was a physical hole in my chest and I could see through it to everyone around me.”
Since becoming a single mother, her will to live has only grown stronger. Shakira said she never tries to paint a happy picture for her children. Milan and Sasha have reportedly seen their mother cry, laugh, celebrate and even work nonstop. “I want to show my kids that life isn’t a straight line. It’s not the way people portray it in the movies. Things don’t go the way we want them to and we have to deal with disappointment. That’s part of the human condition. That’s why we’re here,” she added.
Shakira released her 12th studio album, Las Mujeres Ya No Liorna (Las Mujeres Ya No Liorna) in March 2024. This was her first album release in seven years since 2017’s El Dorado.
